I swear this is the best book I have ever read.
Let's face it, if you were a kid born between the years 1975-ish and 1990, seeing this movie or any of the other 1980's fantasy films was a RITE OF PASSAGE! Along with being able to sit through an episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark? without being so scared you turn off the t.v. The book is even better than the movie. The movie ends at the end of the first half of the book.
The second half..things start to get a little strange halfway through the second half when Bastian begins to lose memory of his former self. But if you plug through that part you will be happy you did! Personally, I don't think one could successfully film the second half of the book, since so many of the changes past the final Ivory Tower scene are Bastian doing a lot of self reflection.
